Bruarfoss. I had heard stories that this was where this might be a gathering sight for the Huldufolk. Perhaps it was their magic that made the water sparkle at its visitors with vibrant hues of blue. I had never seen such blue water in my life. When I had entered its domain and gazed down upon the currents I wished I could become part of it. There was magic in this land no doubt and I could only imagine what it would be like to be embraced by such beauty and strength.
Her glowing blue ripples stare directly into my soul as I watch every harsh movement she makes. The whooshing she bellows provides a sense of calm to my spirit. The fresh air of clean water hits my nostrils and I inhale. It’s crisp and refreshing. I close my eyes briefly to allow the peace to encompass my body. When I open them again there is only more to see. You can gaze where her water meets shore to see how she nourishes the land around. Vibrant green moss, decorating rocks that nestle into one another. An ecosystem that needs no aid just as earth intended.
Before I depart I open my bag rummaging through my supplies. I pull out a small Ziploc bag and open it. Reaching in I grab the largest chunk of fermented shark and place it on a rock closest to the water I can get. I seal the Ziploc placing it back in my bag. “Thank you fairies!” I call out as I stand to make my departure. As I leave I look back once more and think how lucky the fairies are. The respect Iceland shows their land and fairies pays off. It’s surely the healthiest ecosystem I’ve encountered.
I go to walk off and as I’m leaving I see a sparkle in the sky and a shadow of movement.
Is that my fairy?
